FAQ on Abuse - Answer #1

In this ministry, we have used the analogy of being run over. Whether a person has been run over by a motorcycle or a semi truck, damage occurs. The extent of the damage varies greatly, but any incident of being run over will cause damage. Another way we address abuse in our ministry is to term abuse, “small a” abuse and “capital A” abuse, again demarcating variations in severity. Our culture tends to views the word “abuse” only in the category of “capital A” abuse. Yet the dictionary offers one of the definitions of the word abuse as improper or excessive treatment. We would have to say that name calling and hair pulling are abusive by this definition. Why would you be reluctant to call things what they are?
